Today I want to share with you a truth that sets us apart as Christians: We do not grieve as the world does. If these words have given you hope, please share them with others who may be seeking comfort right now.
The Bible gives us a unique perspective on grief, one that is filled with hope and promise. When we lose a loved one, it is natural to be overwhelmed with grief. Tears, heartache, and pain are part of life. But our faith tells us that this is not the end. We have a wonderful hope that death is not the end. Jesus conquered death, and because of Him we have the promise of eternal life.
When we lose someone who trusted in Christ, we can take comfort in knowing that that person is in a much better place. He is free from all the pain and suffering of this world. He is with our loving Father, in a joy that we cannot even imagine as we sit here.
This does not mean that we will not be sad or that we will not cry. Jesus himself wept over the death of his friend Lazarus. So do not be ashamed to shed tears when you are in pain. God understands our pain, and when we are broken, he does not stay away from us—he draws closer.
But when we grieve, there is also a joy in our hearts. Because we know that this separation from our loved ones is not forever. One day we will be reunited with them in heaven. There will be no more death, no more sorrow, no more pain.
In these days of sorrow, let us hold fast to the joy of our salvation and the promise of eternal life. Let us help one another with love and compassion. Let us remind one another of the hope we have in Christ. Perhaps we sit together and share memories, cry together, and hold each other’s hand in prayer.
So it is okay to grieve—it is part of being human. But let us grieve with hope. Because our life story doesn’t end here. There is a day ahead of us when we will be reunited with our loved ones—in the presence of God, forever.
