Today we will discuss a little deeper topic – the wickedness of our heart which is the core of our spiritual journey in human life. This may be a little difficult but don’t worry I will try to explain it simply.
Do you know what our heart is? It is not just a machine that pumps blood, it is the center of our thoughts, feelings and decisions. But sometimes this heart leads us astray. Do you know why? Because we are human, we have weaknesses.
Suppose you are walking on the street and suddenly you see someone dropping a money note. What would your heart say? “Take it, no one is looking!” But you know that is not right. See how the heart wants to lead us astray?
The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). This means that our heart is so complex that we do not always understand why we do what we do.
But do not be discouraged by this. Because God knows our condition, and He wants us to change our hearts with His help. He says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26).
Now the question is, how do we change our hearts? First, we need to recognize that our hearts are not always right. For example, when you are angry, you may think that your anger is justified. But later, when you calm down, you realize that you were overly angry. This is very important to observe ourselves.
Second, we need to pray to God to cleanse our hearts. King David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). We can pray like this too.
Third, we need to read God’s Word and try to live by it. The Bible says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).
Remember, this is a process. Your heart will not change overnight. But gradually, with God’s help, you will see your thoughts and actions change.
Before I conclude, I would like to tell you a story. I had a friend who had a very angry nature. He would often get angry over small things and would not talk. One day he decided that he would change this nature of his. He would pray every day, read the Bible, and whenever he felt angry, he would ask himself – “Is this anger reasonable?” Gradually his nature began to change. Now he has become much calmer and more patient.
So friends, I hope you understand that the wickedness of our hearts is a reality, but it is not unchangeable. With God’s help, we can change our hearts. Let us all try together to direct our hearts towards goodness.
